    Five named recipients of LAS alumni awards


  • The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will honor five individuals with alumni achievement awards during Homecoming 2006.

    The awards will be presented during two ceremonies on Friday, Oct. 20. The first will be a university-wide activity at noon with a second evening ceremony scheduled. That LAS event will also feature recipients of various academic departmental alumni awards within the college. Both ceremonies will be held in the Scheman Building.

    The LAS alumni recipients and their awards including:

    Citation of Merit - awarded to distinguished alumni of LAS who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and received national or international recognition.

    Ed Stanek, 1972 Ph.D. in physics. President and CEO of the Iowa Lottery, Des Moines.

    Distinguished Service Award - awarded to alumni, faculty and friends for their outstanding service or academic contributions that further the educational mission of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

    Kent Fritz, 1958 B.S. in psychology. Real estate.

    Carrie Chapman Catt Public Engagement Award - awarded to an alumni of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who has demonstrated outstanding achievement for their work with public entities at the local, state, national or international levels.

    Kay Runge, 1969 B.S. in history. Director of the Des Moines Public Library.

    John V Atanasoff Research & Discovery Award - awarded to an alumni of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who has furthered scientific knowledge of the nation and the world, either through laboratory accomplishments and/or management.

    W. Lynn Watney, 1970 B.S. in geology and 1972 M.S. in geology. Senior scientist for the Kansas Geological Survey and executive director of the Kansas University Energy Research Center

    Young Alumnus Award - awarded to alumni of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences aged 40 and under who have excelled in their professions and provided service to their communities.

    Christine (Romans) Tobin, 1993 B.S. in journalism and mass communication and French. CNN correspondent.
