September 3, 2008Leo Mores Chapter honored for journalistic excellenceThe Society of Professional Journalists declared the Leo Mores Chapter of SPJ at Iowa State chapter of the year for Region VII. According to Ron Sylvester, the regional president, the chapter did an excellent job organizing the Region VII’s spring conference held last April. "I'm especially pleased that the Leo Mores Chapter was honored like this because of the incredible amount of work that we did last year in putting on the regional conferences as well as First Amendment Day and Visions of Freedom," stated Rashah McChesney, Leo Mores president. Every year, the regional director chooses one chapter within their region that has provided their Society with exceptional service, their campus and the field of journalism as a whole. Out of the 12 chapters, one is selected by the Vice President for Campus Chapter Affairs as the Outstanding Campus Chapter of the Year. McChesney will attend the Atlanta convention on behalf of the Leo Mores Chapter. This year, the Chapter will focus on raising its membership, explained McChesney. As president, she plans to educate the student body about the freedoms they are losing. Founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, SPJ encourages the free flow of information, strives to inspire and teach the upcoming generation of journalists and is committed to protecting the First Amendment. |
