  • Ames Municipal Band to use Central Campus for summer performances

  • An Iowa tradition is moving to Central Campus at Iowa State University this summer.

"There's something neat about keeping music a viable part of a community," said Michael Golemo, associate professor of music at Iowa State. "A community band is a tradition in this state."

Due to restoration of the Ames Bandshell in the city's downtown, the Ames Municipal Band concerts will be held on Central Campus just south of the Campanile from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday evenings in July. Pre-concert entertainment will begin at 7 p.m.

The final free performance is scheduled July 28.

Golemo is in his third year of conducting the Ames Municipal Band, which is comprised of Iowa State students, high school students and individuals who are long-time residents of the community.

"It's neat that these folks continue to make music a part of their lives long after they completed playing in their high school or college bands," Golemo said.

Each concert will feature a new selection of music. Golemo says the programs will range from light classical to marches to jazz and Broadway musicals. The concerts will also include either a vocal or instrumental soloist.

"There's something for everybody at these concerts," Golemo said. "It's a great to pull out the lawn chair, get outside and relax listening to some wonderful music."
