NEWS RELEASE 7-1-09 Contacts: Two new department chairs begin duties in College of Liberal Arts and SciencesAMES, Iowa – Two Iowa State University faculty members have been named chairs of the Department of Psychology and the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies. Carolyn Cutrona, professor of psychology, and Kevin deLaplante, associate professor of philosophy and religious studies, assumed their new positions July 1. Cutrona came to Iowa State in 1992 from the University of Iowa. Cutrona and her research team are conducting a large NIH-funded study of African American families. The study focuses on risk and resilience factors that contribute to the health and well-being of African American children and adults over the life course. Since 2003, Cutrona has been director of ISU’s Institute for Social and Behavioral Research. In 2008 she won the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Award for Outstanding Research. Cutrona replaces Doug Bonett, professor of psychology, who remains on the ISU faculty. Kevin deLaplante’s research focuses on two areas: the history and philosophy of ecology, and the history and philosophy of the complex systems sciences. deLaplante, who has an undergraduate degree in physics, has taught courses such as Introduction to Logic and Scientific Reasoning, Philosophy of Physics, and Ecology and Society. He is the author of several articles and book chapters and reviews, and he has two books in progress. deLaplante came to ISU from the Cape Breton University, Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1999. He replaces Tony Smith, professor of philosophy and religious studies, who also remains on the ISU faculty. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is home to 22 academic departments and one professional school. -30- |
