  • Different parties win "VEISHEA Votes" mock election

The results in a mock presidential election held during VEISHEA 2008 may be unscientific, but they mirror the results of several state and national polls.

VEISHEA goers were asked whether they would support Republican nominee-in-waiting Sen. John McCain (Arizona) and either leading Democratic candidates Sen. Hillary Clinton (New York) or Sen. Barack Obama (Illinois). The mock elections were held in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences tent on Central Campus Saturday, April 12.

In a run-off between McCain and Clinton, the Republican Arizona senator scored 58% of those voters. McCain didn't fare as well in a potential race with Obama, losing to the Illinois senator 68% to 32%.

"The VEISHEA voting results are similar to national hypothetical 'head-to-head' polls that show Obama with a slight advantage over McCain and McCain with a slight advantage over Clinton," said Dianne Bystrom, director of the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics. "However the national head-to-head polls are much tighter than the VEISHEA head-to-head results."

Bystrom says that may be because Obama's lead over Clinton among Iowa voters is more substantial than among voters nationwide.

There were several voters in the VEISHEA mock presidential election that voted for either Clinton or Obama in a race against McCain but not the other.

Bystrom says that is also similar to national polls that show a percentage of the potential Democratic presidential voters who say they wouldn't support the party's nominee in a general election if their candidate didn't win the nomination.

The mock election was sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Catt Center for Women and Politics and the Department of Political Science.
