  • LAS schedules 150th celebration events

  • A gala kickoff celebration is planned for Iowa State's Sesquicentennial during VEISHEA and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will be out in force for the event.

Central Campus will be filled with tents and displays from colleges and other campus units on VEISHEA Saturday (April 21) from noon to 4:30 p.m.

In the area just south of Catt Hall, LAS will have several tents. Some of the displays that will be in the tents include:

  • Diggin' the Union - artifacts discovered last fall from the archaeological dig at the Memorial Union will be on display.

  • Life in the Savanna - explore primatologist Jill Pruetz's day-to-day life as she studies chimpanzees in Senegal.

  • Join the Navy - the Skunk River Navy that is, a group of student environmentalists who clean up the Ames stream each fall.

  • Plaza stories - discover the stories behind the bricks in the Plaza of Heroines and buy a brick for your heroine.

Other exhibits will include displays on the violent video game research by psychologists Craig Anderson and Doug Gentile, a look at storm chasing from the Meteorology program, tours of Catt Hall and the Languages and Cultures for the Profession program in the Department of World Languages and Cultures.

Additional tents will be staffed by LAS Career Services, the Department of Chemistry, the Department of English, LAS international programs and general information on the College.

The life sciences programs, which are jointly administered by LAS and the College of Agriculture, will have a tent between Catt Hall and Curtiss Hall.

In addition, LAS will have two other special tents including a "Meet and Greet" tent. VEISHEA goers will have an opportunity to meet with LAS faculty, staff, alumni and students.

Scheduled to appear are LAS Dean Michael Whiteford, the cast of "The Music Man," Department of History authors of the new ISU history book, Traditions and Transformations, Steffen Schmidt and Jim Colbert, "admiral" of the Skunk River Navy.

Individuals will be rotated throughout the afternoon at 30 minute intervals.

A third major LAS tent will be a photo display of "150 Fascinating People of LAS." This is a collection of faculty, staff, students and alumni in the College whose activities are fascinating to many.

The display is also on-line at www.las.iastate.edu/150/fascinating.shtml.
