Greenlee School plans First Amendment Day April 19
While the title of the event is "First Amendment Day," the
annual function of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication
is a week-long affair.
The prime events are scheduled on Thursday, April 19, with the annual
"Feast on the First" soap-box debates, political cartoon display and student
organization booths set from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Central Campus.
Also scheduled on Thursday will be a keynote address by former UPI White
House Bureau Chief Helen Thomas. She will speak at 8 p.m. in the Great
Hall of the Memorial Union.
Other Thursday events include the First Amendment Day Proclamation and
Freedom March beginning at 8 p.m. at Ames City Hall. The Greenlee School
will also host a high school seminar that day in LeBaron Hall.
The hazards of the freedom of the press will be discussed during "Journalists
in Jeopardy" on Thursday in a panel discussion featuring Dan Ehl,
a Daily Iowegian editor who was assaulted over a city council
story; Dennis Chamberlin, Pulitzer Prize winning photographer who has
worked in Poland and Russia; and John Carlson, Des Moines Register
reporter who was embedded in Iraq. The panel discussion will be held from
2-3 p.m. in 102 Science Hall 1.
Activities begin on Monday, April 16, when Peter Baker, Washington
Post Moscow Bureau Chief, will speak at 6 p.m. in the Sun Room of
the Memorial Union.
Friday's (April 20) events include "Speaking Freely: The Future of Talk,"
from 1:30-3:30 p.m. on the Campanile Stage on Central Campus and "Satire
and the First Amendment" at 11 p.m. in Stephens Auditorium. That discussion
will include presentations by Bill Burr, Barry Crimmins, Baratunde Thurston
and Tina Dupuy.
