Missed opportunities highlight next ISU Theatre production

Karla Kash says she likes to do theatre that makes people think. "The
Pavilion" is no exception to that rule.
ISU Theatre at Iowa State University will present the play about missed
opportunities and possible second chances Nov. 4-6 and 11-13 at the on-campus
Fisher Theater. Show times are 7:30 p.m. with 2 p.m. matinees only on
Sunday, Nov. 6 and 13.
"The Pavilion" is the story of a 20-year high school reunion
and the return of a former student who hopes to win back the girl he left
behind. As the reunion progresses, both Peter and Kari face the consequences
of choices made long ago and learn if they have the strength to go on.
"This is a play about time," said Kash, an ISU Theatre faculty
member and the play's director. "Time is something I think we all
fight with. There's not enough time to do this or that. Not enough time
to do the things you want to do. Nor not enough time to say what you want
to and then, before you know it, time has run out."
Kash says Peter, one of the two primary characters in "The Pavilion,"
has realized that time is about to run out on his opportunity with Kari.
"This is about lost chances and missed opportunities," she said.
"Here are a pair of high school sweethearts who haven't seen each
other in 20 years and although they have gone their separate ways, he
realizes he is still in love with her.
"He sees the high school reunion as a chance to make amends and see
if they can again form some sort of relationship."
This is the type of theatre that Kash says anyone can identify with, although
she admits it will resonate more with the over 30 crowd.
"I think even students in college now will feel nostalgic about their
high school days," she said. "I hope that after watching ‘The
Pavilion' people will make a phone call or go see someone and try to make
amends."
"The Pavilion" is set in 2000 with Peter and Kari, members of
the Class of 1980. The ISU Theatre production will utilize songs from
the late '70s and early '80s.
The play was written by Craig Wright, who has recently turned his attention
to writing scripts for the television shows "Six Feet Under"
and "Lost." The play recently had a production Off-Broadway.
Peter is played by Scott Siepker while Amanda Mullen is Kari. Jennifer
Phillips is the narrator and steps into 12 different roles (both male
and female) as former classmates of Peter and Kari at the reunion.
Tickets are $13 for adults, $12 for seniors and $7 for students. Tickets
are available at all TicketMaster locations and the Iowa State Center
Ticket Office.
