Political images highlight two separate photography lectures at Iowa State University

Two veteran photojournalists will be on the Iowa State University campus in mid-October showcasing and speaking about their political assignments.

Susan Biddle, Washington Post photographer and a former White House staff photographer on assignment at President Reagan's ranch, will speak on "White House Images." Biddle's presentation, which will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, in the South Ballroom of the Memorial Union, is the 2008 Gene and Margaret Chamberlin Lecture in the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication.

Then a few days later (Sunday, Oct. 19), Bill Eppridge, a photographer for such popular magazines as National Geographic, LIFE, People and Sports Illustrated, will speak on "A Time It Was: Bobby Kennedy and the 1968 Election." That lecture will be held at 7 p.m. in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union.

Eppridge's collective assignments read like a list of the most important historical and cultural events from the latter half of the 20th century: the Kennedy campaigns, the Beatles first visit to America, Woodstock, Vietnam. His most recent book, A Time It Was: Bobby Kennedy in the Sixties, shares his intimate coverage of the presidential candidate, including the iconic photograph of a stunned Los Angeles busboy cradling Kennedy in the kitchen of the Ambassador Hotel just seconds after he was shot.

In 1996 Eppridge received the Joseph A. Sprague Memorial Award, the National Press Photographer Association's highest award, in recognition of his lifetime of achievements in photojournalism.

Biddle's photographs have been recognized for capturing the beautiful, the comical and the tragic, including such events as the Columbine shootings. She has been honored by the White House News Photographers and is a contributor to Day in the Life in America.

Her talk is being held in conjunction with The American President, an Associated Press exhibition of presidential candidate photographs, past and present. The Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication will host the exhibit in Hamilton Hall. The American President includes 32 images covering a span from 1898 with photos of Theodore Roosevelt to the 2008 coverage of current presidential hopefuls John McCain and Barack Obama.
