Four awarded Publication Subvention Grants
Four faculty members in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences have been
awarded Publication Subvention Grants from the Office of the Vice Provost for
Research.
The grants are available to support publication of the scholarly writings and
other worthy publications of the Iowa State faculty and staff. Grants are awarded
each fall and spring.
The recipients this spring include:
Michael Bailey, assistant professor of history, for his book
Magic and Superstition in Europe, an overview of the historical development
of magical beliefs and practices in Europe from antiquity to present day.
Laura Mielke, assistant professor of English, for her scholarly
monograph, Moving Encounters: Sympathy and the Indian Question in Antebellum
Literature. The publication examines sympathetic meetings between Euro-Americans
and American Indians as portrayed in a variety of literature written in the
U.S. between 1820 and 1860.
John Monroe, assistant professor of history, for his book,
Evidence of Things Not Seen: Mesmerism, Spiritism and Occultism in France,
1853-1925, a study of religious innovation in late 19th and early 20th
century France.
Mark Rectanus, professor of world languages and cultures,
for his book About Contemporary Literature. The book examines the influential
works that reflect German culture and identity.
