Don Quijote Film Festival features different versions of classic tale
Four vastly different films will comprise the Don Quijote Film Festival in
October and November at Iowa State University.
The Don Quixote theme will be prevalent throughout the film series sponsored
by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and the Western European
Studies Program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
The movies will be shown in 1115 Pearson Hall beginning at 7 p.m. There is no
admission fee and the public is invited.
The Don Quijote Film Festival will open with "Monsignor Quixote,"
a 1987 film starring Alec Guinness and Leo McKern. The modern adaptation of
the novel by Graham Greene has Quixote as an old Spanish village priest who
travels through Spain with his friend, Sancho, the village's mayor, and his
car called Rosinante.
The other movies in the festival include:
- "Don Quixote" - Oct. 18. Orson Welles directs this 1992 version
of the Cervantes' novel.
- "Man of La Mancha" - Oct. 25. The musical version features Peter
O'Toole in the title role and Sophia Loren.
- "Lost in La Mancha" - Nov. 1. This 2002 documentary captures director
Terry Gilliam's attempt to get "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote"
off the ground.
