  • Mexican embassy and Congress, too

Amy Schlesselman interns twice in nation's capital.

  • Amy Schlesselman interned at the Mexican Embassy in Washington, D.C., her junior year, via an opportunity from the Washington Center. The center offers a semester-long program that combines coursework with internships in the nation's capital. She obtained the opportunity through the LAS Career Management Service office. From there, she got an internship for the summer at U.S. Representative Donald Manzullo's office.

"It's definitely been interesting," the senior history and international studies major said. "It's been a good way to make contacts with people in my area of interest."

There were 25 interns the semester Schlesselman worked at the Mexican Embassy. Just five, including Schlesselman, weren't natives of Mexico. And although her high school and college Spanish came in handy, she admits there is a big difference from using it in a classroom to speaking it on a daily basis.

Schlesselman, from Freeport, Ill., worked eight hours a day, four days a week. The other day she took a class on foreign policy.
