Department of Music announces spring performances
- Large ensemble concerts, faculty recitals and festivals highlight the
2005 spring semester Iowa State University Department of Music activities.
Tickets for Department of Music activities in Stephens Auditorium are available
at the Iowa State Center Ticket office, all TicketMaster locations or by
calling 515-233-1888. All events are free unless noted.
Highlights of Iowa State's Department of Music fall schedule include:
January
14-15 - Madrigal Dinners, Great Hall, Memorial Union, 5:30 p.m.
The 40th annual Madrigal Dinners feature a candlelit 17th century banquet
hall filled with the ambiance of a festive Renaissance English court. The
banquet will be "attended" by graceful dancers, playful jesters, strolling
musicians, frolicking fools and gallivanting wenches. Tickets - $30.
23 - Faculty Chamber Music, Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall, 3 p.m.
The first of two Department of Music faculty recitals during the semester,
this performance will feature the brass and voice faculty.
28-29 - Florence Symposium, Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall, 7:30
p.m. The second annual Florence Symposium will be highlighted by a lecture
from Niccolo Capponi, an authority on military history of Europe on Jan.
28. He will speak on "Political, Military and Cultural Implications
of the Sack of Rome, 1527." The next evening, Musica Antiqua, The Music
Men, and present and former students of the Iowa State Florence study abroad
program will present a concert of music related to the Sack of Rome.
30 - Iowa State Singers Bon Voyage Concert, Martha-Ellen Tye Recital
Hall, 3 p.m. Prior to performing at the American Choral Directors Association
national convention in Los Angeles, the vocal ensemble will present a special
concert.
February
2 - Central College Flying Pans, Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall,
7:30 p.m. The steel percussion band from Central College in Pella will present
a free concert.
5 - Ames Piano Quartet, Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall, 7:30 p.m.
Iowa's resident chamber ensemble's latest concert will include the Ames
premiere of a flashy new piano quartet by Paul Schoenfield entitled "Carolina
Reveille," loosely based on the popular song, "Nothing' could
be Fina,' than to be in Carolina in the Morning." The program will
also include works by Mozart and Russian romantic composer Paul Juon.
11-12 - Lipa Festival of Contemporary Music, Martha-Ellen Tye Recital
Hall. This year's festival will highlight electroacoustic music for a surround
sound environment. Guest composer/lecturer Scott Wyatt of the University
of Illinois, who has specialized in electroacoustic composition for multi-channel
sound systems, will present a lecture (Feb. 11 at 4:10 p.m.) and concert
(Feb. 12 at 3 p.m.) during his stay on campus.
18 - ISU Symphony Orchestra, Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall, 7:30
p.m. Iowa State faculty member Jonathan Sturm (violin) will perform with
the ISU Symphony Orchestra on Mozart's "Fifth Violin Concerto."
March
Scholarship Musicales, 7:30 p.m. The annual fundraising event for the Department
of Music will include five separate performances in Ames homes. Seating
is limited with the $30 tickets on sale at the Department of Music. The
Musicales include "Jazzology: Jazz History Through Sound," March 1; "The
Ames Piano Quartet: CD Classics," March 8; Simon Estes, March 28; Basically
Baroque, March 29; and "An Evening of Enchanting Flute Trios," March 31.
5 - May Tsao-Lim and Jin-Young Park, Martha-Ellen Tye Recital
Hall, 3 p.m. Iowa State pianist May Tsao-Lim and Simpson College's Jin-Young
Park will present a piano recital featuring works by all-French composers
- Saint-Saens, Poulenc, Debussy, and Ravel.
22 & 24 - ISU Wind Ensemble with Leigh Howard Stevens, Martha-Ellen
Tye Recital Hall, 7:30 p.m. Leigh Howard Stevens has been hailed as the
world's greatest classical marimbist. Stevens will be in on campus in late
March as the Fisher Artist-in-Residence. He will give a recital of his works
on March 22 and will then be featured with the ISU Wind Ensemble two days
later as the instrumental group focuses on "percussive" compositions
including "Desi," "Kitten on the Keys," "The Big
Cage," and "Rosewood Dreaming."
April
1 - Midwest Children's Choir Festival, Stephens Auditorium, 7 p.m.
The biannual festival will include the Milwaukee Children's Choir, the Northern
Illinois Children's Choir and the Ames Children's Concert Choir. Top singers
from throughout Iowa will join these choirs in a massed choir performance
that will also feature international opera star Simon Estes. Admission will
be charged.
9 - Faculty Chamber Music Recital, Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall,
7:30 p.m. Piano faculty from the Department of Music will play solo pieces
and works for one-piano four-hands, two-piano four-hands, and two-piano
eight hands.
22 - ISU Wind Ensemble, Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall, 7:30 p.m.
Performing many of their selections included on their upcoming May tour
of Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic, the ISU Wind Ensemble will be
joined by Donald Simonson (voice) on Mozart's "Ave Verum Corpus."
24 - Masterworks Concert, Stephens Auditorium, 3 p.m. Franz Joseph
Haydn's "The Creation" will be the featured piece during the Masterworks
concert. Four Iowa State choirs will be joined by Simon Estes and an orchestra
consisting of Iowa State faculty members. Admission will be charged.
26 - ISU Symphony Orchestra, Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall, 5:30
p.m. Pieces for chamber orchestra will be featured including Veni Creator
Spiritus by Iowa State faculty composer Jeffrey Prater.
