    ACADEMIC NEWS
    Software Engineering has been approved as a new major in the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering effective for the fall 2007 semester.

    An Undergraduate Certificate in Latin American Studies has been approved in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The cross-disciplinary course of study is designed for undergraduate students in any major who wish to enhance their degree and employment possibilities by adding expertise in Latin America and linguistic competence in a primary and secondary world language.

    The Department of World Languages and Cultures is offering a series of non-credit short courses in Russian, beginning Spanish, conversational Spanish and beginning Turkish II. The short courses consist of 24 hours of classroom instruction in a six-week format with a fee of $200 per short course.

    A series of seminars and learning communities are being offered for first-year students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences during the 2007 spring semester. Information on "Connections," "Great Challenges" and "Frontiers of the Discipline" are available on-line. Students wishing to enroll in the seminars and/or learning communities should get the course instructor to sign an add slip.

    INTERNSHIPS
    LONDON CALLING – A new program has been established for internship opportunities in London. The 10-week program for the 2007 summer session includes a two-week orientation in Washington, D.C., and eight weeks in London.

    Students can earn academic credit, participate in cultural activities, obtain substantive internships tailored to their individual career interests and have a furnished apartment.

    The application deadline is Feb. 2 and students should contact LAS Career Services in 351 Catt Hall, 294-4841 or lascs@iastate.edu.

    STUDENT GROUPS
    STARTING FROM SCRATCH – A new student organization, the LAS Dean’s Leadership Team, is being established in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The new group will, among other projects, help plan student activities within the College including VEISHEA events and a week-long LAS student celebration in the fall semester.

    Interested students should contact Dave Gieseke at dgieseke@iastate.edu or 294-7742 if they are interested in creating this new student group.

    INTERNATIONAL AMBASSADOR – Rohini Ramnath has felt comfortable no matter where she has gone abroad – to Europe to study abroad or to India to visit family. That’s why she decided to use a $24,000 Rotary Scholarship she was recently awarded to study next academic year at the University of Ghana in Africa.
