UNDERGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES
General requirements for the Certificate in Latin American Studies are satisfied through formal language instruction and by completing a minimum of 24 credits at the 300 level or above. Students will take coursework in at least four different disciplines and departments (Spanish, Portuguese, anthropology, and political science) with other possible course offerings in LAS, History, Agriculture, and Agronomy.

BIOINFORMATICS MAJOR
A new B.S. program in bioinformatics and computational biology is being offered by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The science focuses on a variety of topics including gene identification, expression and evolution; RNA, protein, and genome structure; and molecular and cellular systems and networks.

STUDY ABROAD
A listing of the available College of Liberal Arts and Sciences study abroad programs is on-line – listed both by the countries and semesters the programs are offered. LAS offers study abroad scholarships to help students defray costs of international travel in conjunction with their programs of study. The deadline for the spring 2008 programs (including spring break) is November 1.

GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP
The Iowa State University Student Activities Center will present the 3rd annual Global Citizenship Symposium Thursday, October 4, and Saturday, October 6. Thursday's events will feature a panel discussion on culture, sustainability and other related topics in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union beginning at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, the "climate challenge game" will simulate climate issues and what countries can do to lessen the problem. That event, which will be facilitated by meteorology's William Gutowski, will be held from 1-4 p.m. in the Union's Pioneer Room.

ARTS
Two very different plays open the ISU Theatre fall season. First is the modern day farce "We Won't Pay! We Won't Pay!," which will be performed October 5-7 & 13. Chekhov's classic "Three Sisters," set in turn-of-the-century Russia, will be presented October 12 & 14. Both plays are in Fisher Theater.
