Society of Wetland Scientists honors Iowa State's van der Valk

  • Arnold van der Valk, professor of ecology, evolution and organismal biology, will be recognized in May with the 2008 SWS (Society of Wetland Scientists) Merit Award.

The SWS award is presented annually to an individual in recognition of an outstanding piece of original research, achievement or contribution to wetland science. The award recognizes individuals for specific accomplishments in any field of wetland science and management, and to inspire future effort.

The Iowa State professor was recognized for his paper, “Succession in Wetlands: A Gleasonian Approach” which was published in Ecology.

van der Valk's research looks primarily at the restoration and creation of wetlands. His ongoing studies focus on the revegetation of restored wetlands in the prairie pothole region and in south Florida.

A member of the Iowa State faculty since 1973, van der Valk served as director of the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory for ten years. He is also the editor-in-chief of Plant Ecology (formerly Vegetatio) and was named a Distinguished Iowa Scientist in 2004 by the Iowa Academy of Science.
