Iowa State psychology professor to receive honorary doctorate

Gary Wells, Distinguished Professor of liberal arts and sciences and professor of psychology at Iowa State University, will receive an honorary doctorate from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the City University of New York during ceremonies held Thursday, May 29.
During the ceremony, which will be held in New York City's Madison Square Garden, Wells will make brief remarks to the college's graduates after receiving the honorary doctorate. The honorary degree is based on nominations and votes of the college's professors and approval by the City University of New York Board of Trustees.
Wells is being recognized for his pioneering work on eyewitness identification and his landmark experiments on police lineups that have resulted in reforms in many police jurisdictions across the United States.
Wells earned his Ph.D. in psychology at The Ohio State University in 1977 and joined the Iowa State faculty in 1988. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation since the early 1990s.
He has earned numerous other awards for his research, including the Distinguished Contributions to Forensic Psychology award from the American Psychology-Law Society and the Presidential Citation Award from the American Psychological Association.
