• Ethel Annie MacFarlane Spedding
  
  Ethel Spedding graduated with distinction from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor's degree. She also received a master's degree in history from the University of Toronto.
  
  The native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, she taught at Victoria High School in Victoria, British Columbia and was chair of the history department at the school.
  
  She gave up her formal career as an educator when she met Frank Spedding during a summer session at the University of California at Berkeley. They were married in June 1931 and moved to Ames in 1937.
  
  Mrs. Spedding kept the home fires burning while her husband spent days away from Ames working on the top-secret atomic bomb project.
  
  "That was a very different era," said Elizabeth Calciano, the Spedding's daughter. "She devoted herself to my father's career and gave up her own."
