Degree Audit Layout

A degree audit is designed with a program side and a summary side.

Program Side

The front of the degree audit lists degree program requirements. The requirements are broken down into numbered sections or areas. LAS audits have been carefully designed to reflect requirements specified by the university and the college on the left-hand side and the department on the right-hand side.

Areas

The left-hand side, often referred to as the "college side" of the audit, specifies university-wide requirements, the LAS foreign language requirement and the LAS General Education Group requirements. These requirements are laid out in Areas 1 through 7 as listed below.

Area 1 Basic Education
(ENGL 104 and 105, LIB 160, US Diversity, Int'l Perspectives)
Area 2 Foreign Language
Areas 3 through 7
LAS General Education Group Requirements
Area 3 Group I Arts and Humanities
Area 4 Group II Communication
Area 5 Group III-A Mathematical Disciplines
Area 6 Group III-B Natural Sciences
Area 7 Group IV Social Sciences

The right-hand side, or sometimes referred to as the "department side," specifies department requirements, complementary courses (courses outside the major, but required by the department), minor requirements (if applicable), and electives. These requirements are typically laid out in Areas 8 through 10, but will vary according to major.

Area 8 Major
Area 9 Complementary Courses (typically)
Area 10 Electives

Across the bottom of the program side of the audit is a COURSES NOT APPLIED TO THE PROGRAM section (referred to as Area 99). This section can include failed courses, courses that have no grade or an incomplete, repeated courses, or junior college cutback courses.

Multiple Majors/Curricula and Minors
The degree audit system can not handle more than one major/curriculum or minor on a single audit. Students with multiple majors/curricula and minors will receive more than one audit.

A and B Categories

Each area on the audit consists of two categories, A and B (see below). The A category lists both completed and current courses that meet the area requirement. The B category lists the specific courses and number of credits which must be taken or are left to take to fulfill that particular area. It also lists any grade requirements on the required courses (if applicable).
A. COURSES TAKEN IN THIS AREA

B. REMAINING AREA REQUIREMENTS
As courses are taken which fulfill particular area requirements on the audit, they will appear under the A categories. B categories will remain on the audit until all requirements in the areas have been satisfied. If a requirement has been partially satisfied, sometimes an asterisk will appear in front of the B category. When the area has been completed, the B category will disappear (with the exception of the electives area). Theoretically, a graduating senior's audit should run "clean," with only A categories showing.
Credits Applied in Audit
At the bottom of the right-hand side the number of current credits is listed and the number of credits applied in the audit. If duplicate credits exist, the number of credits applied in the audit may be inaccurate. (See Duplication of Credit section on Checklist.)
Summary Side

The back of the degree audit, like the front, is divided into two columns. The left-hand column lists any modifications that have been made to the degree audit (waivers, forced assignments, dual assignments, individual requirements, and notations). It also lists courses that can be used to fulfill unmet high school admissions requirements (if applicable).

The right-hand column provides a "snapshot" of information about the student prior to the semester for which the audit was run. This information includes a term grade summary, number of drops remaining, designated repeat credits left, ISU P/NP credits taken, number of transfer credits, number of 300+ credits taken (both transfer and at ISU), quality-point deficiencies, and foreign language status.
