  • LAS Graduation Awards Ceremony
    May 2008 Instructions

  • The Spring 2008 College Commencement Convocation will be held in James H. Hilton Coliseum Friday, May 9, at 8 p.m.  The all-University Commencement ceremony will be held in Hilton Coliseum Saturday, May 10, at 1:30 p.m. Seating is unlimited and tickets are not required for either ceremony. Attendance at these events is optional.

    The College Ceremony: The LAS Commencement Convocation ceremony will begin promptly at 8 p.m. Hilton Coliseum will open at 7 p.m. The LAS Convocation will include remarks from Michael Whiteford, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and individual recognition of all students present. The ceremony will begin with a formal procession of faculty and students in cap and gown. Students will cross the stage as their names are read and be recognized by the Dean and the chair of their respective academic department.

    Student Attendance Card: An invitation to the LAS Convocation will be e-mailed to each student’s local address approximately six weeks before graduation.  It includes a Student Attendance Card. Students who plan to participate in the ceremony must return this card to the LAS College Administration Office, 202 Catt Hall or dgieseke@iastate.edu, by Thursday, May 8, 2008. This card will be used by the reader to properly pronounce each name during the program.

  • Cap and Gown:  Students should wear a black cap and gown to the ceremony. (The same cap and gown can be worn during the University Commencement ceremony.) Caps and gowns can be purchased or rented from the the University Bookstore. The cap should be worn level, with the tassel on the left side.

    Arriving at Hilton Coliseum:  Students should arrive at Hilton Coliseum by 7:30 p.m. Please leave coats, purses and other valuables with family or friends. Programs will be provided on student chairs in the coliseum.

    Processional Line-up: North end of the Coliseum (Level 3). Please check-in at the registration desk on the north side of the coliseum. You will then be directed to the appropriate academic major area. Students will carry their card into the ceremony and present it to the reader at the time the student is recognized. College staff will be present to assist.

    The Procession:  The procession will begin at 7:45 p.m., starting from the assembly area. Convocation Marshals will lead students. As you enter your row of seats, remain standing.

    Individual Recognition: Students present will be recognized by Department. Marshals will ask students to stand and usher them to the stage. Each student will present his/her card to the reader and proceed across the stage to be recognized by the Dean and appropriate Department Chair. Students will return to their seats and remain standing until the Marshals instruct them to be seated.

    Recessional: There will be a recessional only for faculty and others on the platform. Students remain standing until the faculty leaves the stage. Marshals will dismiss students. Faculty will remain in the coliseum a short time to greet students and their guests.

    Photographs: During the procession, the lights in the Coliseum will be at full intensity for photographs. Flash attachments are not necessary. High-speed daylight type film is recommended for color photography, both still and motion picture. Family photographs may be taken after the close of the ceremony using the stage as a background, if desired.

    Jolesch Photography will take a photo of each student participating in the ceremony. This photo will be taken as the student crosses the stage and is greeted by the Dean and department chair.  Students will receive a free color proof approximately two weeks following graduation. There is no obligation to order any photographs and the proof may be kept.     Special Assistance: Any student who plans to participate in the LAS College Commencement Convocation who will need special assistance during the ceremony should contact David Gieseke at 515-294-7742 prior to the convocation to make arrangements. Guests who need assistance should enter Hilton at the west, ground floor entrance.
