  • Have you ever thought about having a career that allows you to travel the world?
  • Have you ever dreamed of living abroad?
  • Would you like to visit the sites and experience the culture of China?

If you answered "Yes" to any of these questions, we invite you to consider joining us on the

2007 Global Careers and the Cultural of China study tour (3-credits, USt 336)

Global Careers and the Culture of China is designed to give Iowa State students in any major an opportunity to meet Americans who are currently working professionally in China, visit their work environments, to hear the stories of how they came to work there, and to acquire guidance for how to build their own international career. You will also meet young Chinese professionals and learn how they are planning their careers. In 2006 we visited with John Deere, Sauer-Danfoss, The Western Academy of Beijing (K-12 school), The U. S. Embassy, JHJT Transportation (Yellow Freight), Squires Sanders (American law firm practicing in China).

We will visit Beijing (the political capital of modern China), Shanghai (the financial capital of modern China), and Dunhuang (an oasis in the Gobi Desert). The 14-day trip (May 9 – 24) will provide many opportunities for you to visit sites that have shaped China's ancient and recent history and free time for you to explore. In 2006 we visited The Great Wall, Forbidden City, Ming Tombs, Tiananmen Square, Summer Palace, Beijing Hutong (original "alleyway" local neighborhoods or old Beijing), Gobi Desert Sand Dunes, Mogao Caves, Shanghai Museum and saw performances including the Beijing Opera and the Shanghai Acrobats.

The class of up to 20 participants is forming NOW. A pre departure seminar series (11 Tuesday evenings beginning January 30, 2007) will prepare you by reviewing Chinese architecture, history, music, language, religion, environment, modern growth, culture as well a review of potential international careers. Applicants are being selected on a "first come" basis until we reach 20.
