LONDON, LITERATURE, AND THEATRE

Dates: May 12 through June 2, 2007
Director: Dr. Constance Post
Department of English

English 395A, Study Abroad, 3 credits

Spend three weeks in London studying literature, drama and film about this great city. Students will live in Bayswater and walk to class nearby. Authors studied will include Shakespeare, Dickens and Lewis Carroll as well as contemporary writers of London's vibrant multicultural mosaic, Zadie Smith and Monica Ali. There will be day trips to Oxford and Stratford-upon-Avon as well as many visits to London theatres, museums, and sites of significance for class readings. Students of all majors are welcome.

The goal of this course is to offer a contextualized study of English literature with a focus on literature set or performed in London, as well as nearby Stratford-upon-Avon and Oxford. In particular, the program makes the most of the immediate context of central England, focusing on the dynamic presence of English culture, history, and geography in a variety of literary works.

The historical scope of the course extends from 1590 to the present, and even for the texts by Shakespeare most of the locales depicted in these works are still observable. As a result, you will be able to consider the specific settings and cultures that condition the literature we will read. Field trips to sites related to English history and to the works to be read and seen are a vital part of the course.

At the end of the program, you will:

* Understand the ways in which a particular culture affects literary works

* See how live theatre, as both a process and a product, adds an important dimension to understanding dramatic literature

* Practice writing skills in reading responses, journal entries, and a final exam; practice oral communication skills in class discussions and presentations

* Appreciate cultural diversity through experience in one of Europe's most heterogeneous societies

Prerequisites for English 395A: Study Abroad (3 credits): English 105 or the equivalent.

Criteria for student selection: In addition to the standard materials provided by all study abroad applicants, you will be asked to submit an additional letter of recommendation from an academic source.
