LAS Student Council Meeting Minutes
January 31, 2007
Officer's Meeting
- Budget for American Choral Directors
- Historically, appx. reasonable allocation per student would be, given
current resources. Ranged from $10-25.
- Recommend $420 – 30 dollars per person for the allocation.
- Constitution discussion will wait until next meeting.
Council Meeting
Presentation by Olivia Madison, Dean of the Library and University Library
Committee
"Our Library at a Crossroads". Dean Madison/ULC meeting with
all the college councils, and are planning two open forums in late February.
- Questions: Proposed fee would be per semester.
- Questions: Other Regent universities are waiting to institute fee
until they know what ISU will do.
- Questions: How long would it take to do the survey? Hopefully GSB/GPSS
will consider in March and April meetings. Proposal has been in the
works for two years so far. If approved this year, fee would take effect
in 2008/2009 academic year.
- Questions: Has big12 collaboration been taken to lower publication
costs or report to Better Business Bureau? Publishers are often part
of a group, owned by international companies who don't just publish.
One firm is trying to make a case to ensure that federal-sponsored research
is freely accessible, but some publishers trying to stop it. Could be
worse, but could be better.
- Questions: Can I get more info? Yes
- Questions: Which students would pay? Both undergrads and grads. The
usage of fee would probably be proportional for number of undergrads
and grads, though decision not yet made. Note differences within undergrad
students, particularly between colleges.
- Questions: New textbooks for reserve – which books? Probably
the textbooks for large enrollment classes.
- Questions: Textbooks change daily – when would you update?
Depends on the faculty – would want textbook that is being used
for the course.
- Questions: Go to website for Library committee – if you have
any questions, contact Dean Madison
- Questions: The surveys that are going out – how targeted? Random
survey of students, with a high percentage of students queried. Query
the same percentage of graduate and undergrad students.
- Questions: Will faculty be expected to contribute or have fee? No,
there's no way of implementing that. Faculty do have the responsibility
of letting admin. know about priority of library. Faculty speak through
Faculty Senate – Faculty Senate played a large roll in creating
electronic library – the Faculty helps set budget priorities for
university. Many of the donors are current or retired Faculty.
- Questions: What do you want from the council? We're letting you know
about this issue – want you to be well informed. As GSB makes
its decision, if you choose to take a positon on the fee, you can send
a message to your GSB senators. Business Council will be making a recommendation
to their senators. Spread the word! Go back to your groups to let people
know about the issue.
- Questions: Format electronic or paper? It will be electronic –
people who are asked to take it will be alerted by e-mail.
Senate appointment
- John Newman interested; Kat resigned.
- Kat: I've known John...he knows a lot in terms of what's going on
on campus, would be positive influence on GSB.
- John Newman receives the appointment.
New representative from Naval Science – Justin.
Reports:
GSB:
- A large number of senators have resigned recently; there were 14 seats
open, seats will remain open. Be on the look-out for responsible students
who are interested in working with students and aren't daunted by some
boredom and want to do a real service to ISU. Have them get in touch
with the council or with GSB.
- SORP probably up for a vote tonight – this is a policy which
will affect the way EVERY student organization becomes a club, we'll
be voting on it tonight.
Minutes approved
Committee reports
- VEISHEA: instead of doing a table or tent for ourselves, thinking
about spending some time just wearing a t-shirt helping people and answering
questions. This would be helping with the LAS College's central tent
instead of the Council having its own tent. The tent would be open from
12-5. We could put together a big display, but maybe it would be better
to just help out with the main LAS College tent and be gophers.
- In future, VEISHEA people can meet during off weeks – who's
interested? E-mail will be sent to those who aren't here. Meeting would
be at normal meeting time next week in the normal room.
- Constitution: Lots of little things that would take hours –
big problem would be the allocations and the departments, will discuss
at next meeting
New Secretary
- Tim is the new secretary – old secretary isn't going to Iowa
State this semester.
Old Business:
- ISU – American Choral Directors allocation request
- Exec recommends $420 total be given to help them out - $30 per person.
Zaal suggested $32 per person, $448 would be total. Further suggestion
to make it $450.00, passed.
Departmental reports
- Political Science will be discussing war in Iraq on Thursday evening;
information will be e-mailed to council.
- We've been asked to contribute to VEISHEA input for various honoree
awards (Leah forwarded an email about this… "Memorable Teacher"
recognition)
Attendance policy for this semester:
- You can have two absences and be eligible for funding, three and
you aren't eligible; an excused absence is 1⁄2 an absence.
Upcoming business:
