Officer's Meeting

Present:

  • Laura Vernon Scholarship
    • Eligability requirements: Council rep, not graduating this semester.
    • Discussion of essay requirements - up to 500 words.
    • Letter of recommendation required.
  • Conference funding requests
    • Naval Science
    • BPMI - recommending $30/person - $390 total

Officer reports

  • Applications for funds will be due soon
  • Elections for officers for next year will occur at the next meeting - so far there is just one person who's expressed interest in a position (president), please contact Leah if you're interested in a position.
  • The got ignorance? meeting will be Mar. 4 @ 5 PM in the Gallery Room in the Memorial Union

GSB reports

  • Jon Turk, currently an Associate Justice with the GSB Supreme Court, addressed the Council - he's running a write-in campaign for an LAS seat in GSB.
  • Elections are on March 5-6 @ http://vote.iastate.edu. Please remember to vote.
  • Several areas on campus are poorly lit - there is a spot for a possible blue light telephone
    • GSB may consider funding or recommendation on this issue in the future
    • not everyone has a cell phone, particularly freshmen
    • LAS Council - priority for this?
  • Other projects - bike racks, MU sign, clean up Lake Laverne
  • Library proposed student fee: survey will be out March 1-11

    • Naval Science- two people going
    • BPMI- 30/person = $390 - going to Des Moines
    • Advisor: come up with a fixed price per student, it makes things easier
  • Scholarship app
    • due March 21st
    • Submit resume, narrative statement, letter of support from a faculty member
    • eligiblility: member of Council, not graduating this semester
    • selection committee recommends to Dean
    • 3-$700 scholarships, Apps to be e-mailed out soon
  • Dean:
    • VEISHA - introduction for the upcoming 150th year of university.
    • Class cancellation - weather safety: 85% of students within a mile and a half of campus. Classes can be cancelled mid-day if necessary. Safety is key.
    • Gilman Hall - fundraising, will announce plans for a new building just northwest of the current Gilman Site. Long overdue, this is an important project. Spring '09 is when groundbreaking will probably happen. Building will contain new classrooms.
  • Constitution
    • References to advisor and dean are meant to be advisory in nature, not veto in nature. Provides a degree of shared responsibility.
  • Next Wed. night - Dr. Pruetz will be discussing her research. She studies chimps and monkeys in Africa and Central America, and her work is reported about all over the world. Her big discovery is that apes are making tool to use when hunting. National Geographic funds some of her research. The LAS homepage (http://www.las.iastate.edu) has a picture and links related to it.
    • The lecture is Wednesday in the MU's Sun Room @ 8 P.M. It's the first public discussion of her research
  • Greenleaf School, biology, BPMI - external review of departments will be done
