Originally from St. Petersburg, Russia, Olga Mesropova completed her B.A. and M.A. in Methodology of Teaching Foreign Languages (1995) and a Ph.D. in Philology (2000) at Russian State Hertzen University. She was a graduate fellow at the University of Michigan in 1994/95. Prior to joining ISU in the Fall of 2002, she was a Visiting Assistant Professor of Russian at Colorado College.

Her research interests are in 20th century Russian literature, film, and culture studies. With an extensive background in linguistics and women's studies, she places her work in an interdisciplinary context and combines literary analysis with gender studies, anthropology, sociology, folklore, rhetoric, the semantic theory of humor, the study of images and stereotypes, and discourse analysis. She is interested in the construction of gender and national identity in Soviet and post-Soviet Russia as revealed in Russian satirical writing and performance and is writing a book on the involvement of contemporary Russian women in humor production that includes an interdisciplinary analysis of female literary, journalistic, and popular "jokelore." She has taught a number of courses on Russian women-writers, as well as on female images in Russian literature and is currently developing a course entitled "Russia, Women, Culture" that will explore the changing roles and images of women in Russian literature, culture, and history from the beginning of Russian Civilization to the present. The course will be cross-listed with the Women's Studies Program.
